> Today we discover the Francesco Torti Theater

Built in 1886, designed by the architect Antonio Martini, inside the ancient Palazzo dei Consoli, it is named after the scholar Francesco Torti. It is one of the smallest theaters in Umbria, only 251 seats, but it is finely decorated and contains interesting nineteenth-century paintings. The theater has a horseshoe plan, three tiers of boxes and a loggia; the parapets consist of cast iron balusters. The ceiling is the work of Mariano Piervittori and represents the Muses dancing. The original curtain was painted by Domenico Bruschi with Propertius who pointed out his homeland to the Torti in 1886; on the occasion of the 1994 restoration another curtain was built by the painter Luigi Frappi.

The theater is part of the city circuit that can be visited with a single ticket, which also includes the Civic Museum, the Mosaic of Roman Baths, the Cloister of San Domenico and the Roman port building.

Realizzato nel 1886, su progetto dell’architetto Antonio Martini, all’interno dell’antico Palazzo dei Consoli, è intitolato al letterato Francesco Torti. È uno dei teatri più piccoli dell’Umbria, solamente 251 posti a sedere, ma è finemente decorato e contiene interessanti pitture ottocentesche. Il teatro ha una pianta a ferro di cavallo, tre ordini di palchi ed una loggia; i parapetti sono costituiti da colonnine in ghisa. Il plafone è opera di Mariano Piervittori e rappresenta le Muse che danzano. Il sipario originale è stato dipinto da Domenico Bruschi con Properzio che addita al Torti la sua patria nel 1886; in occasione del restauro del 1994 è stato realizzato un altro sipario dal pittore bevanate Luigi Frappi.

Il Teatro fa parte del circuito cittadino visitabile con biglietto unico di cui fanno parte anche il Museo Civico, il Mosaico delle terme romane, il Chiostro di san Domenico e l'edificio portuale di epoca romana.
