Mariano Piervittori (Tolentino, 1817 - Orvieto, 1888), a leading artist in his time in Italy who worked mainly in Umbria, decorated numerous homes of the rich Umbrian bourgeoisie, drawing inspiration from episodes and characters related to local history. In 1874 he painted a curtain for the Morlacchi Theater in Perugia which illustrates "The return of Biordo Michelotti to Perugia".

Our post is dedicated precisely to this painting.

Biordo Michelotti (Perugia, 1352 - Perugia, 1398) was a leader to whom many fiefdoms bordering the Perugia area, in fear of losing their independence and entering the orbit of the dominion of the Papal States, they submitted to him in exchange for his military protection. In 1393 he was welcomed with all the honors in the city to preside over its government. In short a first lordship was born, remembered for its brevity but also characterized by a period of important reforms.

Mariano Piervittori (Tolentino, 1817 – Orvieto, 1888), artista di spicco nell’Italia del suo tempo che lavorò soprattutto in Umbria, ornò numerose dimore della ricca borghesia umbra traendo spunto da episodi e personaggi legati alla storia locale. Nel 1874 dipinse un sipario per il Teatro Morlacchi di Perugia nel quale è illustrato “Il ritorno di Biordo Michelotti in Perugia”.

Biordo (Perugia, 1352 – Perugia, 1398) fu un condottiero al quale molti feudi limitrofi al territorio perugino, nel timore di perdere la loro indipendenza e di entrare nell'orbita del dominio dello Stato Pontificio, gli si assoggettarono in cambio della sua protezione militare. Nel 1393 fu accolto con tutti gli onori in città per presiederne il governo. In breve nacque una prima signoria ricordata per la sua brevità ma anche caratterizzata da un periodo di importanti riforme.
