> Even if it's very old, the origins of Umbertide are still uncertain. Some scholars believe was founded by the Etruscans (the first settlements seem to date back to the sixth century b.C. as evidenced by the "bronzes from Monte Acuto", which are votive statuettes found in the sanctuary located on the summit of the mountain), others believe by the Umbrians. A popular tradition says that Umbertide was founded under the name of " Pitulum " or " Oppidum Saepis " by soldiers of the legions of the Roman Consul Flaminio , who survived the disastrous battle of Trasimeno (217 b.C) , and they would have spread out in the mountains near the lake, and later they would have came down again to reach the valley of the Tiber. Some authors state that the name of this primitive settlement was " Tusicum ," others , to indicate the ancient Roman town , use the names of " Forum Bremitii " or " Forum Julii " . Certainly, even in recent times , has been found in the basement of Umbertide and surrounding areas ,numerous finds from the Roman period.

Alcuni studiosi la ritengono fondata dagli Etruschi (i primi insediamenti sembrano risalire intorno al VI Secolo A.C. come testimoniano i “bronzetti di Monte Acuto”, statuette votive ritrovate nel santuario posto sulla vetta del monte), altri dall'antico popolo degli Umbri. Una tradizione diffusa vuole che Umbertide sia stata fondata, col nome di "Pitulum" o di "Oppidum Saepis", da soldati Romani delle legioni del Console Flaminio, scampati alla disastrosa battaglia del Trasimeno (217 a.C.), i quali si sarebbero sparsi in fuga disordinata per le montagne a ridosso del lago, che avrebbero poi ridisceso per raggiungere la valle del Tevere. Alcuni autori affermano che il nome di questo primitivo insediamento fosse "Tusicum", altri, per indicare l'antico centro romano, usano i nomi di "Forum Bremitii" o "Forum Julii". Certo è che, in periodi anche recenti, sono stati rinvenuti nel sottosuolo di Umbertide e nelle zone circostanti numerosi reperti di età romana.
