Dominated by the rocky cliffs on which the towering castle of Taizzano rests, situated along the left bank of the Nera river was the ancient port of ancient Narnia, in use, from Roman times until the 18th century, for the transport of timber, bricks and foodstuffs from Umbria to Rome.
It is likely that the structure also served for a regular transport of people to Rome, as reported by Tacitus, the consul Gnaeus Calpurnus Pisone in the year 19 AD reached the capital by embarking right in Narni.

Sovrastato dalle balze rocciose su cui poggia il sovrastante castello di Taizzano, sito lungo la riva sinistra del fiume Nera era l’antico porto dell’antica Narnia, in uso, dall’epoca romana sino al XVIII secolo, per il trasporto di legname, laterizi e derrate alimentari dall’Umbria fino a Roma.
È probabile che la struttura servisse inoltre anche per un regolare trasporto di persone verso Roma, come riferisce Tacito, il console Gneo Calpurnio Pisone nell’anno 19 d.C. raggiunse la capitale imbarcandosi proprio a Narni.
