Outstanding tourists have been enthralled by it, such as Michaelangelo Buonarroti, who wrote to Vasari “I had the pleasure to visit those hermitages on the Spoleto mountains and I came back less than halved to Rome, for you don’t really find peace but in the woods”. Giosuè Carducci first and Gabriele D’Annunzio after, praised the beauties of the Spoletan landscape in their poems. Painters such as English William Turner, American Edward Peticolas or Danish Johan Ludvig Lund, sketched valuable cityscapes on their travel diaries. French novelist Stendhal expressed his admiration for “la passeggiata”, a.k.a. Viale Matteotti, the street that from the city centre worms into the surrounding hills.

Se ne infatuarono “turisti” d’eccezione come Michelangelo Buonarroti che al Vasari scriveva “Ho avuto piacere nelle montagne di Spoleto a visitare quei romiti di modo che io son tornato men che mezzo a Roma perché veramente non si trova pace se non nei boschi“. Giosuè Carducci prima e Gabriele D’Annunzio poi, utilizzarono la loro poesia per decantare le bellezze del paesaggio spoletino. Pittori come l’inglese William Turner, l’americano Edward Peticolas o il danese Johan Ludvig Lund schizzarono nei loro taccuini pregevoli paesaggi e vedute della città. Il romanziere francese Stendhal espresse grande ammirazione per “la passeggiata”, il tratto di strada, oggi Viale Matteotti, che dal centro storico si insinua tra il verde dei colli circostanti.
