According to some it would be Giuseppe's acceptance of Mary's motherhood, a very rare theme in the history of art. According to another interpretation the two would be Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Virgin, caught in the moment of the revelation of Anna's pregnancy.

Secondo alcuni si tratterebbe dell'accettazione di Giuseppe della maternità di Maria, tema rarissimo nella storia dell'arte. Secondo un'altra interpretazione i due sarebbero Gioacchino e Anna, i genitori della Vergine, colti nel momento della rivelazione della gravidanza di Anna.
