The title and the cult towards San Nicola di Mira was brought from the East by the Syrian hermits, and the first oratory had to be early Christian.
It was enlarged in Romanesque style in the 12th century with the extension to the river of the castle walls.
In 1210 the church depended on the Benedictines of Sassovivo, it became a pieve in 1446.
It was enlarged and restored in its present form by the guild of Lombard master masons between 1509-1521. The entrance to the church is preceded by a large porch. "Leave all worries if you enter to pray" reads the lintel.

> La chiesa di San Nicola o Nicolò, patrono della città, sorge in pieno centro storico, presso Scheggino e la sua costruzione va fatta risalire al XII secolo.
Il titolo ed il culto verso San Nicola di Mira fu portato dall’oriente dagli eremiti siriani, ed il primo oratorio dovette essere paleocristiano.
Esso fu ingrandito in stile romanico nel XII secolo con l’estendersi fino al fiume delle mura castellane.
Nel 1210 la chiesa dipendeva dai benedettini di Sassovivo, divenne pieve nel 1446.
Fu ampliata e restaurata nella forma attuale dalla corporazione dei maestri muratori lombardi tra il 1509-1521. L’ingresso della chiesa è preceduto da un ampio portico. “Lascia ogni preoccupazione se entri per pregare” si legge sull’architrave.
