Here the Romans had an observation post that dominated the "Traiana" road (or Cassia Nuova), one of the most important communication routes between Rome and the north of the peninsula. Testimony of this era is a marble memorial stone found near the town a few centuries ago and now preserved in the church of Santa Maria Vecchia.

During the Middle Ages, the "Castrum Ficulensis" was fortified, and in the long years of feudal struggles, it suffered frequent looting and devastation, remaining still the most important castle of the municipality of Orvieto.

From these destructions, however, the two fortresses and the ancient walls were saved, which still today give the town the typical structure of the medieval village.
In the last century Ficulle assumed a pre-eminent position in the territory of the Upper Orvietano, covering the role of chief town of district.

Qui i romani avevano un posto d'osservazione che dominava la via "Traiana" (o Cassia Nuova), una delle più importanti direttrici di comunicazione tra Roma e il nord della penisola. Testimonianza di quest'epoca è un cippo marmoreo ritrovato nei pressi del paese qualche secolo fa ed oggi conservato nella chiesa di Santa Maria Vecchia.

Durante il medioevo, il "Castrum Ficulensis" fu fortificato, e nei lunghi anni delle lotte feudali, subì frequenti saccheggi e devastazioni, rimanendo pur sempre il più importante castello del comune Orvietano.

Da queste distruzioni si salvarono comunque le due rocche e le antiche mura, che conferiscono tutt'oggi al paese la struttura tipica del borgo medievale.
Nel secolo scorso Ficulle assunse una posizione preminente nel territorio dell'Alto Orvietano, rivestendo il ruolo di capoluogo di mandamento.
