I want to dedicate today's post to one of the many masterpieces that, despite everything, Umbria still has: the "Baglioni Chapel" of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Spello (Perugia).
The chapel was entirely frescoed by Pinturicchio between the end of the summer of 1500 and the spring of 1501 and the frescoes tell us some Marian episodes: on the left wall is depicted the Annunciation which surround scenes of everyday life; the back wall is dedicated to the Adoration of the Shepherds which reveals the Cavalcade of the Magi; on the right wall there is the Dispute of Jesus with the doctors of the temple. On the vault four Sibyls are painted, the prophets of classical antiquity, who later also passed into the Christian tradition, as Christians saw in the predictions of distant pagan seers heralds the advent of Jesus Christ and his expected final return.
We are faced with a work of art that does not need further comments as it is recognized not only as Pinturicchio's masterpiece but above all as one of the greatest masterpieces of the entire Italian Renaissance.

Il post di oggi lo voglio dedicare ad uno dei tanti capolavori che, nonostante tutto, ancora l'Umbria possiede: la “Cappella Baglioni” della Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore di Spello (Perugia). La cappella fu interamente affrescata dal Pinturicchio tra la fine dell’estate del 1500 e la primavera del 1501 e gli affreschi ci raccontano alcuni episodi mariani: sulla parete di sinistra è raffigurata l’Annunciazione cui fanno da contorno scene di vita quotidiana; la parete di fondo è dedicata all’Adorazione dei pastori che lascia intravedere la Cavalcata dei Magi; sulla parete di destra ci appare la Disputa di Gesù con i dottori del tempio. Sulla volta sono dipinte quattro Sibille, cioè delle profetesse dell'antichità classica, passate poi anche nella tradizione cristiana, in quanto i cristiani videro nelle predizioni delle veggenti pagane lontani preannunci dell'avvento di Gesù Cristo e del suo atteso ritorno finale.
Ci troviamo di fronte ad un’opera d’arte che non ha bisogno di ulteriori commenti in quanto riconosciuta non soltanto come il capolavoro del Pinturicchio ma soprattutto come uno dei più grandi capolavori di tutto il Rinascimento italiano.
