> What today we call Halley's comet was clearly visible in the skies for several days in January 1472, as documented by the descriptions and calculations on its orbit of the astronomers of the time: the adjectives "frightening and horrible" used by the Regiomontan to describe it testify to the strong impression that aroused the event.
It is possible that the unusual iconography of the comet that we can admire in this work is an echo and that Pietro Vannucci wanted to paint the star that guided the Magi in the image of the comet that he himself had been able to see in the sky just three years before.

> Quella che oggi chiamiamo cometa di Halley fu ben visibile nei cieli per diversi giorni nel gennaio del 1472, come documentato dalle descrizioni e dai calcoli sulla sua orbita degli astronomi del tempo: gli aggettivi "spaventosa ed orribile" usati dal Regiomontano per descriverla testimoniano la forte impressione che suscitò l'evento.
E' possibile che l'insolita iconografia della stella cometa che possiamo ammirare in questa opera ne sia un'eco e che Pietro Vannucci abbia voluto dipingere la stella che guidò i Magi ad immagine della cometa che egli stesso aveva potuto scorgere nel cielo appena tre anni prima.
