The façade of the Cathedral of Orvieto is considered one of the highest expressions of Italian Gothic art.
The construction work began in 1290, the first mass was celebrated on August 15, 1297 by Pope Boniface VIII.
Impossible to show, in a sufficiently clear way, all its rich structure in a single photo and therefore the post is dedicated only to a glimpse of this masterpiece.
The three portals on the facade give a great effect; the decoration of the central portal is wonderful, with a series of twisted columns alternating with decorative bands. In the paintings of the cusps various scenes from the life of Jesus and the Virgin are represented with golden mosaics.
The bas-relief scenes that adorn the four pillars of the façade are true narratives of humanity from the origins to the end of the world.

La facciata del Duomo di Orvieto è considerata una delle più alte espressioni dell'arte gotica italiana.
I lavori di costruzione iniziarono nel 1290, la prima messa vi fu celebrata il 15 agosto 1297 da papa Bonifacio VIII.
Impossibile mostrare, in modo sufficientemente chiaro, in una sola foto tutta la sua ricchissima struttura e pertanto il post è dedicato soltanto ad uno scorcio di questo capolavoro.
I tre portali sulla facciata sono di grande effetto; stupenda è la decorazione del portale centrale che vede alternarsi una serie di colonnine tortili con fascioni decorativi. Nei quadri delle cuspidi sono rappresentate varie scene della vita di Gesù e della Vergine con mosaici dorati.
Le scene dei bassorilievi che ornano i quattro pilastri della facciata sono vere e proprie narrazioni dell’umanità dalle origini alla fine del mondo.
