<> HISTORY of Monte Castello di Vibio
The name of this town comes from gens Vibia, a Roman noble family who owned much property in the area. Its urban layout is typical of a medieval castle. Built on a hilltop to dominate the Tiber Valley, its strategic location was the object of the territorial ambitions of the powerful neighbour Todi, which ruled over it for a long time. Repeated rebellions finally forced Todi to raze the town's walls.

In 1303 the fortress was rebuilt by the larger city, adding it to its defensive system. The proud character of the residents, however, prevailed until 1596, when Todi finally consolidated its power. In the Napoleonic era the village flourished, opening up to new ideas with initiatives of great importance. It finally became an independent comune after the Second Pontifical Restoration in 1814.

Il nome del paese deriva dalla "gens Vibia", nobile famiglia romana, che qui ebbe numerosi possedimenti. La sua struttura urbanistica è quella del tipico castello medievale, costruito su una posizione di dominio sulla valle del Tevere. Questa sua posizione strategica costituì un forte motivo per le ambizioni territoriali della vicina e potente città di Todi, che controllò a lungo il borgo, che in seguito alle ripetute ribellioni fu costretto a subire l'abbattimento delle mura.

Nel 1303 la rocca venne ricostruita dalla stessa Todi che la inserì nel suo sistema difensivo. Il carattere fiero dei montecastellesi continuò comunque a prevalere fino al 1596, quando Todi riuscì a consolidare definitivamente il suo potere. In epoca napoleonica conobbe un periodo di splendore, aprendosi alle nuove idee con iniziative di grande importanza. Divenne Comune dopo la seconda restaurazione pontificia del 1814.
