Once home to important figures of the time, the fortress was designed by Matteo Gattapone, a distinguished fourteenth-century architect, and is still considered a jewel of the city.
Until the middle of the eighteenth century the fortress housed the papal governors and the most important figures of the time. In 1499 it was also home to Lucrezia Borgia, who was governor of the Duchy.

> La rocca di Spoleto si erge sulla sommità del colle Sant'Elia, fu edificata a partire dal 1359, per volontà di Papa Innocenzo VI che intendeva ristabilire l’autorità del Pontefice (che dimorava allora ad Avignone), nei suoi territori.
La fortezza prende il nome dal potente Cardinale spagnolo Albornoz, che affidò a Matteo Gattapone la direzione dei lavori. E' stata dimora di importanti personaggi.
Fino alla metà del Settecento la rocca ospitò i governatori pontifici ed i maggiori personaggi dell'epoca. Nel 1499 ospitò anche Lucrezia Borgia quale governatrice del Ducato.
