Around 1550, Giacomo Mancini, known as "El Frate", made the majolica plate covered by this post in his Deruta (Perugia). In this dish, a gruesome story is told: two brothers, in deep disagreement on how to interpret the paternal will regarding the inheritance, appeal to the King's judgment.
The sovereign then orders to unearth their father's corpse, to tie it to a tree and make it a target for the arrows that the two brothers themselves will have to throw at it.
At this point, while one of the two begins without delay that macabre target shooting, the other rebels against the order of the king and moves away. He's obviously the true heir.
On the left we see the king seated on a throne and in the center one of the two spectators indicating, pointing the finger upwards, the virtues of "Prudence" (on the left, with a snake in one hand and a mirror in the other) and of "Justice" (on the right, with a sword in one hand and a balance in the other).
These beautiful dish is now kept in the "Museum & Art Gallery" in Birmingham (England).

Intorno al 1550, Giacomo Mancini, noto come “El Frate”, ha realizzato nella sua Deruta (Perugia) il piatto in majolica oggetto di questo post. In questo piatto è raccontata una storia raccapricciante: due fratelli, in profondo disaccordo su come interpretare le volontà paterne in merito all’eredità, si appellano al giudizio del Re.
Il sovrano ordina allora di disseppellire il cadavere del loro padre, di legarlo ad un albero e di farne un bersaglio per le frecce che gli stessi due fratelli dovranno scagliargli contro.
A questo punto, mentre uno dei due inizia senza indugio quel macabro tiro al bersaglio, l’altro si ribella all'ordine del re e si allontana. È ovviamente lui il vero erede.
A sinistra vediamo il re seduto in trono ed al centro uno dei due spettatori che indica, puntando il dito verso l’alto, le virtù della “Prudenza” (a sinistra, con in una mano un serpente e nell'altra uno specchio) e della “Giustizia” (a destra, con in una mano una spada e nell'altra una bilancia).
Il nostro bellissimo piatto è oggi conservato nel “Museum & Art Gallery” di Birmingham (Inghilterra).
