> The first written sources date the pottery of Deruta (in Umbria) to 1282. In this period, defined as "archaic", the Deruta production consists of objects of common use such as bowls, cups, bowls, pitchers and mugs. The stylistic typologies are decorations with geometric, zoomorphic, floral and sacred symbology motifs, traced in only two colors, ramina green and manganese brown.

In the second half of the fifteenth century and in the early sixties, Umbria was the center of an important school of painting where great masters such as Perugino, Pinturicchio and Luca Signorelli worked, from which the Deruta ceramists took iconographic inspiration and pictorial taste .

In questo periodo, definito “arcaico”, la produzione derutese è costituita da oggetti di uso comune quali scodelle, tazze, catini, brocche e boccali. Le tipologie stilistiche sono decorazioni a motivi geometrici, zoomorfe, floreali e simbologie sacre, tracciate in due soli colori, verde ramina e bruno di manganese.

Nella seconda metà del XV secolo e nei primi anni del XVI l’Umbria era il centro di una importante scuola di pittura dove operavano grandi maestri come il Perugino, il Pinturicchio e Luca Signorelli, dai quali i ceramisti derutesi hanno tratto ispirazioni iconografiche e gusto pittorico.
