> PART 1 of 3 - Città di Castello history. Ancient Umbrian center not subdued by the Etruscans, it was a thriving Roman Municipality, with the name of Tifernum Tiberinum, mentioned in its epistles by Pliny the Younger who built a temple there at the beginning of the 2nd century.
Towards the beginning of the 4th century the Gospel S. Crescenziano, Roman legionary, preached there. It is tradition that Tiferno was destroyed by Totila and resurrected by the Bishop Florido. During the Lombard period the city took the name of Castrum Felicitatis, while in the Middle Ages it was a free municipality of the Guelph part which, under the name of "Civitas Castelli", extended its dominion over the neighboring territories up to the Apennines.

Durante il periodo longobardo la città assunse il nome di Castrum Felicitatis, mentre nel medioevo fu libero comune di parte guelfa che, con il nome di “Civitas Castelli”, estese il suo dominio sui territori confinanti fino al di la dell’Appennino.
