Since the "Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage" was established in 1969, 790,626 stolen works of art have been recovered, 1,190,791 archaeological finds and 272,384 fake goods have been seized. 1,192 people were arrested and 35,584 people were reported.

Among the 15 treasures counted among the most sought after works in Italy and abroad by the operational department of the Carabinieri Command there is also the very precious "Madonna in adoration of the Child with St. John the Baptist" (tempera on panel; executed around 1480) attributed to Pier Francesco Fiorentino (1444 or 1445 - post 1497), stolen March 19, 1979 from the Pinacoteca di Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio (Perugia) and disappeared into thin air. This masterpiece is also known as the "Madonna of the pomegranate" because at the feet of the child, lying with the left elbow resting on the right hand and with the head resting on a pillow with bows, a pomegranate is represented, the fruit in sacred art it assumes the double meaning of chastity and resurrection.

Da quando è stato istituito il “Comando carabinieri tutela patrimonio culturale”, nel 1969, sono stati recuperati 790.626 oggetti d'arte trafugati, sequestrati 1.190.791 reperti archeologici e 272.384 beni falsi. Sono state arrestate 1.192 persone e sono state denunciate 35.584 persone.

Tra i 15 tesori annoverati tra le opere più ricercate in Italia e all'estero dal reparto operativo del Comando Carabinieri vi è anche la preziosissima “Madonna in adorazione del Bambino con san Giovannino” (tempera su tavola; eseguita nel 1480 circa) attribuita a Pier Francesco Fiorentino (1444 o 1445 - post 1497), rubata il 19 marzo 1979 dalla Pinacoteca di Palazzo dei Consoli di Gubbio (Perugia) e sparita nel nulla. Questo nostro capolavoro è noto anche col nome di “Madonna del melograno” perché ai piedi del Bambinello, giacente col gomito sinistro appoggiato sulla mano destra e col capo che riposa sopra un cuscino con fiocchi, è rappresentata una melagrana, il frutto nell'arte sacra assume il doppio significato di castità e di resurrezione.
