The preparatory drawings actually document that the work of Raphael painted for the Perugian church of San Francesco al Prato (and whose seventeenth-century copy donated by the Pope to the city is exhibited in our Gallery) was born in the mind of the author precisely as a traditional deposition ( inspired by the models of his master Pietro Vannucci) but then, in a creative process that can be reconstructed from numerous drawings and drafts, it was transformed, already in 1506, into the innovative transport scene, unanimously admired and celebrated that we all know.

> Conosciuta come Deposizione Borghese (perché, a seguito di un furto, ne divenne proprietario Scipione Borghese), questa celebre pala rappresenta invece il trasporto di Cristo al sepolcro.
I disegni preparatori documentano in realtà che l'opera di Raffaello dipinta per la chiesa perugina di San Francesco al Prato (e la cui copia seicentesca donata dal Papa alla città è esposta nella nostra Galleria) nacque nella mente dell'autore proprio come deposizione tradizionale (ispirata ai modelli del suo maestro Pietro Vannucci) ma che poi, in un processo creativo che è possibile ricostruire da numerosi disegni e bozze, si trasformò, già dal 1506, nell'innovativa scena di trasporto, unanimemente ammirata e celebrata che tutti conosciamo.
