A trip, between evocative landscapes and party atmosphere, towards Gubbio to admire the city but also to admire what has entered, quite rightly, in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest Christmas tree in the world

Since 1981 a group of volunteers has realized for Christmas what has entered, rightly, in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest Christmas Tree in the world: it is a realization that only in the spirit of the most genuine voluntary service is able to have continuity in time.

The figure of an immense Christmas tree is made by knowing with skill on the wild slopes of Mount Ingino, behind the splendid medieval town of Gubbio, lighting fixtures of various types and colors, which create a very special and unique chromatic effect: with a base of 450 meters, for over 750 meters (just under thirty football fields) hiding its roots in the walls of the medieval city and arriving with its big star at the Basilica of the Patron, Sant'Ubaldo, placed on top of the mountain .

On December 7 of each year, during a public event, the Tree is lit with a ceremony that involves the other subjects who best interpret our centuries-old traditions.

The ceremony is chaired by personalities from the world of institutions, culture, science and voluntary service; in 2014 it was Pope Francis who lit the Tree, in 2013 the Director of the Italian Caritas, Don Francesco Soddu, in 2012 the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano and in 2011 it was preceded by the Holy Father Benedict XVI; previously, the undersecretary for Civil Defense, Guido Bertolaso, the president of Libera, don Luigi Ciotti, the general manager of Telethon, Pietro Spirito, the director of the European Institute of Oncology, Pier Giuseppe Pelicci, had presided over the opening ceremony.

The Tree never leaves indifferent but always manages to excite and re-emerge those feelings that sometimes the everyday has clouded: amazement, wonder, enthusiasm, all feelings that lead us to feel closer, to be together with greater understanding, sharing, tolerance , brotherhood.

Una gita, tra paesaggi suggestivi ed atmosfera di festa, verso Gubbio per ammirare della città ma anche per ammirare quello che è entrato, ben a ragione, nel Guinness dei primati come l’Albero di Natale più Grande del mondo

Dal 1981 un gruppo di volontari realizza in occasione del Natale quello che è entrato, ben a ragione, nel Guinness dei primati come l’Albero di Natale più Grande del mondo: è una realizzazione che solo nello spirito del più genuino volontariato riesce ad avere continuità nel tempo.

La figura di un immenso albero di Natale è realizzata disponendo con sapienza sulle selvagge pendici del Monte Ingino, alle spalle della splendida città medioevale di Gubbio, corpi illuminanti di vario tipo e colore, che disegnano un effetto cromatico assolutamente particolare e unico: si distende, con una base di 450 metri, per oltre 750 metri (poco meno di trenta campi di calcio) nascondendo le sue radici nelle mura della città medioevale e arrivando con la sua grande stella alla basilica del Patrono, Sant’Ubaldo, posta in cima alla montagna.

Il 7 dicembre di ogni anno, nel corso di una manifestazione pubblica, l’Albero viene acceso con una cerimonia che vede coinvolti gli altri soggetti che meglio interpretano le nostre secolari tradizioni.

La cerimonia è presieduta da personaggi del mondo delle istituzioni, della cultura, della scienza, del volontariato; nel 2014 è stato Papa Francesco ad accendere l’Albero, nel 2013 il Direttore della Caritas Italiana, Don Francesco Soddu, nel 2012 il Presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano e nel 2011 lo aveva preceduto il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI; in precedenza avevano presieduto alla cerimonia di accensione il sottosegretario alla Protezione civile, Guido Bertolaso, il presidente di Libera, don Luigi Ciotti, il direttore generale di Telethon, Pietro Spirito, il direttore dell’Istituto Europeo di Oncologia, Pier Giuseppe Pelicci,

L’Albero non lascia mai indifferenti ma riesce sempre ad emozionare e far riemergere quelle sensazioni che a volte la quotidianità ha annebbiato: stupore, meraviglia, entusiasmo, tutte sensazioni che portano a sentirci più vicini, a stare insieme con maggiore comprensione, condivisione, tolleranza, fratellanza.

Se poi vuoi meglio capire perché gli Eugubini si dice che siano “matti” aggiungi che tutto è fatto gratuitamente per puro spirito di volontariato.
