According to Ludovico lacobilli the monastery was built in 970.
The earliest known news of this Benedictine settlement dates back to 1138 and is derived from a privilege issued by Pope Innocent II in favor of the bishop of Foligno Benedetto and preserved in the Six Keys Archives of the Municipality of Foligno.
Also mentioned in 1183, it is always referred to by the lacobilli, remembered as a "monastery of black monks of the ancient Benedictine congregation [...] and it was a very powerful abbey".
However, as early as 1239 it did not have to be such if it was only remembered for its church; this probably due to the transfer of the monks to the Abbey of Sassovivo.
Other documents that speak of the church are an act of the notary Accoramboni of 1226, where the prior and the canons are named, and a sentence of Cardinal Capocci of the year 1239, containing the names of the churches subject to the bishopric of Foligno, among other San Salvatore.

Secondo Ludovico lacobilli il monastero fu edificato nel 970.
La più antica notizia certa di tale insediamento benedettino risale al 1138 e la si deduce da un privilegio emesso da papa Innocenzo II in favore del vescovo di Foligno Benedetto e conservato nell'Archivio delle Sei Chiavi del Comune di Foligno.
Menzionato ancora nel 1183, è, sempre dallo lacobilli, ricordato come “monastero di monaci neri dell’antica congregazione benedettina […] ed era abbazia molto potente“.
Tuttavia già dal 1239 esso non dovette essere più tale se viene rammentato solamente per la sua chiesa; ciò probabilmente dovuto al trasferimento dei monaci all'Abbazia di Sassovivo.
Altri documenti che parlano della chiesa sono un atto del notaio Accoramboni del 1226, ove sono nominati il priore ed i canonici, ed una sentenza del cardinale Capocci dell’anno 1239, contenente i nominativi delle chiese soggette al vescovado di Foligno, tra le altre San Salvatore.
