> Inside the Pinacoteca of the San Francesco Municipal Museum in the village of Montone you can admire the beautiful MADONNA DELLA MISERICORDIA by Bartolomeo Caporali. The work, which dates back to 1482, is a tempera on canvas and is realized on commission from the Franciscan Convent.
Recently restored, it is undoubtedly the most important pictorial work of the collection and represents the perfect synthesis between the Tuscan and typically Umbrian pictorial canons, combining the use of gold background with landscape representations. It is a typical banner against the plague, which falls within the genre of those made in the fifteenth century, in Umbria and especially in Perugia, to invoke the divine rescue in case of calamity and disease. The Virgin of Mercy protects, in fact, the faithful with their cloak from the arrows that symbolize the calamities hurled by Christ Judge, in the earth; a skeleton with a sickle, an image of death, alludes to the nefarious effects of the plague. In addition to the saints represented on the left are: Sebastiano (protector antipeste), Francesco (saint to whom the church is named) Biagio (protector of the throat and wool carders) and Giovanni Battista (as protector of the Municipality of Montone), appear on the right, Nicola (patron of the Franciscan order, merchants and merchants) Bernardino (important Franciscan saint together with Saint Anthony of Padua, protector of the sick to the lungs), Gregory (to whom the parish is dedicated) and Anthony of Padua ( the holy miracle worker of the Franciscans).
In the realistic representation of the city below, the church of San Francesco and the fortress of Braccio are evident, of which it is the only historical document before its destruction made by Pope Sixtus IV.

Recentemente restaurata è senza dubbio l’opera pittorica più rilevante della raccolta e rappresenta la sintesi perfetta tra i canoni pittorici toscani e quelli tipicamente umbri, unendo l’uso del fondo-oro con le rappresentazioni paesaggistiche. Si tratta di un tipico gonfalone contro la peste, che rientra nel genere di quelli realizzati nel XV secolo, in Umbria e in particolare in ambito perugino, per invocare il soccorso divino in caso di calamità e malattie. La Vergine della Misericordia protegge, infatti, i fedeli con il proprio mantello dalle frecce che simboleggiano le sciagure scagliate da Cristo giudice, nella terra; uno scheletro con la falce, immagine della morte, allude agli effetti nefasti della peste. Oltre ai santi rappresentati a sinistra che sono: Sebastiano (protettore antipeste), Francesco (santo a cui è intitolata la chiesa) Biagio (protettore della gola e dei cardatori di lana) e Giovanni Battista (in veste di protettore del Comune di Montone), compaiono a destra, Nicola (protettore dell’ordine francescano, mercanti e commercianti) Bernardino (santo francescano importante assieme a sant’Antonio da Padova, nonché protettore degli ammalati ai polmoni), Gregorio (cui è dedicata la pieve) e Antonio di Padova (il santo taumaturgo dei Francescani).
Nella realistica rappresentazione della città in basso, sono evidenti la chiesa di San Francesco e la rocca di Braccio di cui è l’unico documento storico prima della sua distruzione fatta operare da Papa Sisto IV.
