The Church of Santa Maria Assunta of Cerqueto (Marsciano - Perugia - Umbria) holds a fresco dedicated to San Sebastiano, executed in 1478; it is the oldest authentic work of Perugino.

In 1485, the great master painted a new work dedicated to San Sebastiano (others, always with different inspirations and always of high level, will paint over the years) and today's post is dedicated to this. In it, the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian (Roman military condemned for his Christian faith to the sieving of arrows) takes place outdoors, in a sad landscape where a white lily emerges, at the bottom right, a symbol of purity. The martyr looks to heaven, as if to find comfort in the divine superior world. The arrow stuck in one side is the only reference to martyrdom. A handwritten inscription is on the arrow pen: "PETRVS PERVSINVS PINXIT".

The work (oil on panel, 174 x 88 cm) was located for the first time, in 1750, in a private English collection. In 1923 it was bought by a famous London art dealer, Arthur Sully; finally, in 1928, it was acquired by the National Museum of Stockholm (Sweden), where it is now exhibited.

La Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta di Cerqueto (Marsciano - Perugia) custodisce un affresco dedicato a San Sebastiano, eseguito nel 1478; si tratta della più antica opera autentica del Perugino.

Nel 1485, il grande maestro dipinse una nuova opera dedicata a San Sebastiano (altre, sempre con ispirazioni diverse e sempre di alto livello, ne dipingerà nel corso degli anni) ed il post di oggi è dedicato proprio a questa. In essa, il martirio di san Sebastiano (militare romano condannato per via della sua fede cristiana alla crivellatura di frecce) avviene all'aperto, in un paesaggio triste dove emerge, in basso a destra, un giglio bianco, simbolo di purezza. Il martire guarda verso il cielo, come a trovare conforto nel mondo divino superiore. La freccia conficcata in un fianco è l'unico accenno al martirio. Una scritta autografa si trova sulla penna della freccia: “PETRVS PERVSINVS PINXIT”.

L’opera (olio su tavola, 174 x 88 cm) è stata localizzata per la prima volta, nel 1750, in una collezione privata inglese. Nel 1923 è stata acquistata da un famoso mercante d’arte londinese, Arthur Sully; infine, nel 1928, è stata acquistata dal National Museum di Stoccolma (Svezia), dove oggi è esposta.
