> UMBRIA'S ARTWORK AROUND THE WORLD

The work presented in this post (oil on canvas, 161.9 x 114.3 cm) remained in Perugia, absolutely unknown, until 2011. It appears in a posthumous inventory of Cardinal Benedetto Monaldi Baldeschi (1588-1644) as "St. Peter in the act of contemplation of the Spagnoletto". Jusepe de Ribera, also known by the nickname of Spagnoletto (Spain, 1591 - Naples, 1652), was a Spanish painter who arrived very young in Italy and became one of the leading figures in seventeenth-century European painting.
The painting shows Saint Peter with his hands clasped in prayer, his head directed towards the sky and his eyes red, which were filled with tears, after having denied being a disciple of Christ in the courtyard of the house of the High Priest. It was then that Peter remembered what Jesus had said: "before the cock crows, you will deny me three times".
The painting remained in Perugia, owned by the heirs of Cardinal Monaldi Baldeschi, until its sale in 2012.
Today it is kept in the prestigious "Metropolitan Museum of Art" in New York (United States of America).

L’opera presentata in questo post (olio su tela, 161,9 x 114,3 cm) è rimasta a Perugia, assolutamente sconosciuta, fino al 2011. Essa figura in un inventario postumo del cardinale Benedetto Monaldi Baldeschi (1588-1644) come "San Pietro in atto di contemplatione opera dello Spagnoletto". Jusepe de Ribera, conosciuto anche col soprannome di Spagnoletto (Spagna, 1591 – Napoli, 1652), è stato un pittore spagnolo giunto giovanissimo in Italia e divenuto uno dei massimi protagonisti della pittura europea del XVII secolo.
Il dipinto mostra San Pietro con le mani giunte in preghiera, la testa diretta verso il cielo e gli occhi arrossati, che si riempirono di lacrime, dopo avere negato di essere un discepolo di Cristo nel cortile della casa del Sommo Sacerdote. Fu allora che Pietro si ricordò di quanto Gesù aveva detto: “prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte”.
Il dipinto è rimasto a Perugia, di proprietà degli eredi del cardinale Monaldi Baldeschi, fino alla sua vendita, avvenuta nel 2012.
Oggi è custodito nel prestigiosissimo “Metropolitan Museum of Art” di New York (Stati Uniti d’America).
