> SAN MARIANO'S CASTLE
The human settlement in the area of ​​San Mariano dates back to ancient times, as evidenced by the discovery of an Etruscan necropolis in the Strozzacapponi area and almost certainly the first Proto Castello was built in the second half of the 6th century AD. during the gota war to defend itself from the Lombards. During the twelfth century the local lords promoted a process of fortification, but the first castle did not look like we can see today. In the course of the centuries, in fact, it was modified and in 1474 the inhabitants asked for and obtained the tax exemption to pay and fix the walls and it is probably from this date that the construction of the current castle begins adjacent to the old one.
Its church, dedicated at the beginning to San Mariano, was built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries AD .. In 1050 some monks brought you the forearm of the saint and later in the second half of the twelfth century. it was named after Santa Maria. There is little information on its original structure, but we know that in 1530 there was a need to expand it.
Living within the walls of the Castle of San Mariano today is like diving into a medieval past between stones and ancient towers ... modern castles of the 21st century ..

It is exciting to walk in this place because it is like going back in time, in a remote but current past because the structure is preserved in an excellent way.

> CASTELLO DI SAN MARIANO
L’insediamento umano nella zona di San Mariano risale ad epoche antiche, come testimonia il ritrovamento di una necropoli etrusca in zona Strozzacapponi e quasi sicuramente il primo proto Castello fu costruito nella seconda metà del VI secolo d.C. durante la guerra gota per difendersi dai longobardi. Nel corso del XII secolo i signori locali promossero un processo di incastellamento, ma il primo castello non aveva l’aspetto di quello che possiamo ammirare oggi. Nel corso dei secoli, infatti, fu modificato e nel 1474 gli abitanti chiedono ed ottengono l’esenzione delle tasse per poter pagare e sistemare le mura e probabilmente è da questa data che inizia la costruzione del castello attuale in posizione adiacente a quello vecchio.
La sua chiesa, dedicata all’inizio a San Mariano, fu costruita tra il XI e il XII sec d.C.. Nel 1050 alcuni monaci vi portarono l’avambraccio del Santo e in seguito nella seconda metà del XII sec. fu intitolata a Santa Maria. Poche sono le notizie sulla sua struttura originaria, ma sappiamo che nel 1530 ci fu la necessità di ampliarla.
Vivere dentro le mura del Castello di San Mariano oggi è come tuffarsi in un passato medievale tra pietre e torri antiche… castellani moderni del XXI sec..

E' emozionante passeggiare in questo luogo perchè come tornare indietro nel tempo, in un passato remoto ma attuale in quanto la struttura è conservata in modo eccellente.
