> Of Roman origin, the ancient name was Castrum Valli or Castrum Vallis which could mean both "castle of the valley" and "castle of the vallo", ie fortified place (vallum). The reference to the Nera river was added after the unification of Italy. Vallo di Nera emerges from the woods with its compact houses of light stone, extraordinarily preserved since 1217, when the city of Spoleto granted the men of Vallo to build a castle to defend the valley on the hill of the Flezano where previously stood a Lombard fortress. The mighty walls and ancient towers surround the stone houses that are leaning against each other and interrupted only by steep alleyways, arches and underpasses. Two symmetrical gates, Portella and Portaranne, allow access to the village. Here the transit is allowed only to pedestrians.
Once inside it seems to be in the Middle Ages: loopholes, corbels, narrow passages, burnished and tightened alleys, precious Romanesque churches and stone portals.

> Di origine romana, l’antico nome era Castrum Valli o Castrum Vallis che poteva significare sia “castello della valle” sia “castello del vallo”, ossia luogo fortificato (vallum). Il riferimento al fiume Nera è stato aggiunto dopo l’Unità d’Italia. Vallo di Nera emerge dai boschi con le sue case compatte di pietra chiara, straordinariamente conservato dal 1217, quando la città di Spoleto concesse agli uomini di Vallo di costruire un castello a difesa della valle sul colle Flezano dove in precedenza sorgeva una rocca longobarda. Le mura possenti e le antiche torri circondano le case in pietra che sono addossate le une alle altre e interrotte solo da ripide viuzze, da archi e sottopassaggi. Due porte simmetriche, Portella e Portaranne, permettono l’accesso al paese. Qui il transito è consentito solo ai pedoni.
Una volta dentro sembra di essere nel medioevo: feritoie, mensoloni, passaggi stretti, vicoli bruniti e serrati, le preziose chiese romaniche e i portali in pietra.
