FERENTILLO: A MILLENARY HISTORY THAT WALKS TOGETHER WITH THE NERA RIVER.
The origins of the village date back to the VIII century and its history is closely linked to that of the Longobard abbey of San Pietro in Valle, in defense of which more than 20 castles still exist today. The events of Ferentillo always followed those of the abbey and the abbey fief tried to become independent both from the Duchy of Spoleto and from the power of Rome. The territory became a small State (Status Ferentilli) in 1484 thanks to Pope Innocent VIII (Giovanbattista Cybo), who named first Lord his nephew Franceschetto. He married Maddalena de Medici and in 1515 his son, Lorenzo Cybo, married Ricciarda Malaspina, joining Ferentillo to the Principality of Massa Carrara and Piombino. The lordship Cybo lasted until 1730, when it passed to the duke Nicolò Benedetti and the Montevecchi of Fano. It became a municipality with the unification of Italy in 1860.
To see, in Matterella, just at the beginning of the village, the church of Santa Maria, with its beautiful renaissance frescoes and the mysterious templar symbols left by the Cybo. In the village of Precetto there is the church of Santo Stefano, built in the 16th century over another church of the '300 reduced to cemetery crypt. Right in the crypt of the church of Santo Stefano is the Museum of Mummies: inside it are preserved 35 mummies of locals and travelers of the XVI-XIX. To visit the Rocca del Precetto, reachable by a beautiful tourist path.
The territory, included in the Nera River Park area, is the ideal destination for lovers of sports tourism, with the possibility of practicing many outdoor sports, first of all climbing, which makes Ferentillo one of the most important natural gyms and frequented in Italy and in Europe. Moreover, the presence of the Nera river, next to trout sport fishing, also allows spectacular descents of rafting and trekking on the Nera Greenways.

Le origini del paese risalgono all'VIII secolo e la sua storia è strettamente legata a quella dell'abbazia longobarda di San Pietro in Valle, a difesa della quale furono eretti più di 20 castelli tutt'oggi esistenti. Le vicende di Ferentillo seguirono sempre quelle dell'abbazia e il feudo abbaziale tentò di rendersi indipendente sia dal Ducato di Spoleto sia dal potere di Roma. Il territorio divenne piccolo Stato (Status Ferentilli) nel 1484 grazie a Papa Innocenzo VIII (Giovanbattista Cybo), che nominò primo Signore suo nipote Franceschetto. Questi sposò Maddalena dè Medici e nel 1515 suo figlio, Lorenzo Cybo, prese in moglie Ricciarda Malaspina unendo così Ferentillo al Principato di Massa Carrara e Piombino. La signoria Cybo durò fino al 1730, quando passò al duca Nicolò Benedetti ed ai Montevecchi di Fano. Diventò Comune con l'Unità d'Italia nel 1860.
Da vedere, a Matterella, proprio all'inizio del borgo, la chiesa di Santa Maria, con i suoi stupendi affreschi rinascimentali ed i misteriosi simboli templari lasciati dai Cybo. Nel borgo di Precetto si trova la chiesa di Santo Stefano, innalzata nel XVI secolo sopra un'altra chiesa del '300 ridotta a cripta cimiteriale. Proprio nella cripta della chiesa di Santo Stefano si trova il Museo delle Mummie: al suo interno sono conservate 35 mummie di abitanti del luogo e viaggiatori del XVI-XIX . Da visitare la Rocca del Precetto, raggiungibile tramite un bellissimo sentiero turistico.
Il territorio, inserito nell'area del Parco Fluviale del Nera, è la meta ideale per gli amanti dl turismo sportivo, con possibilità di praticare molte sport outdoor, prima fra tutte l'arrampicata, che fa di Ferentillo una delle palestre naturali più importanti e frequentate d'Italia e d'Europa. La presenza del fiume Nera, inoltre, accanto alla pesca sportiva alla trota, consente anche delle spettacolari discese di Rafting e Trekking sulla Greenways del Nera.
