L'Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle, a Ferentillo (Terni), è uno dei monumenti storicamente e artisticamente più importanti dell'Umbria. Fondata nel VI sec. da due eremiti siriani, Giovanni e Lazzaro, venne ingrandita e intitolata a San Pietro dal Duca longobardo di Spoleto, Faroaldo II.
Edificata sopra i resti di un antico tempio romano, l'abbazia di San Pietro in Valle possiede un patrimonio artistico unico. La chiesa abbaziale viene definita “Mausoleo dei Duchi longobardi di Spoleto” in quanto qui si fecero seppellire tutti i duchi longobardi venuti dopo Faroaldo II realizzando così la collezione di sarcofagi romani più grande dell'Umbria (6 sarcofagi). Sempre nella chiesa sono conservati, un cippo “Thesaurus” preromano della Tribù Quirina, l'altare longobardo di “Ursus Magester” e il ciclo di affreschi romanici più antico dell'Umbria cui si ispirò Giotto per i suoi affreschi nella Basilica di San Francesco in Assisi. L'Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle ad oggi è una delle mete più frequentate dai turisti stranieri e viene spesso utilizzata come location per matrimoni da tutto il mondo. Negli anni è stata utilizzata spesso come Set cinematografico con film di eccezionale importanza come Brancaleone alle Crociate con Vittorio Gassman. Ad oggi l'abbazia è divenuta una Residenza d'Epoca mentre la chiesa abbaziale è aperta al pubblico secondo orari prestabiliti.

The Abbey of San Pietro in Valle, in Ferentillo (Terni), is one of the most historically and artistically important monuments in Umbria. Founded in the VI century by two Syrian hermits, Giovanni and Lazzaro, it was enlarged and named "San Pietro" by the Longobard Duke of Spoleto, Faroaldo II.
Built over the remains of an ancient Roman temple, the abbey of San Pietro in Valle has a unique artistic heritage. The abbey church is defined as the "Mausoleum of the Longobard Dukes of Spoleto" because all the Lombard dukes that came after Faroaldo II were buried, thus creating the largest Roman sarcophagi collection in Umbria (6 sarcophagi). Also in the church are preserved, a "Thesaurus" pre-Roman stone from the Quirina Tribe, the Lombard altar of "Ursus Magester" and the oldest Romanesque fresco cycle in Umbria that inspired Giotto for his frescoes in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. The Abbey of San Pietro in Valle today is one of the most visited by foreign tourists and is often used as a location for weddings from around the world. Over the years it has often been used as a film set with films of exceptional importance such as "Brancaleone at the Crusades" with Vittorio Gassman. To date, the abbey has become a period residence while the abbey church is open to the public according to pre-established schedules
