> Hotel VILLA CICONIA is situated in Umbria, on the outskirts of Orvieto, 2 km from the Florence-Rome motorway exit. It is an elegant Villa which dates from the 15th century and is surrounded by an age-old park between river Chiani and Carcaione.

Local historiography tells us that “Villa Ciconia” was originally a Roman tower,“La Turchinetta”, and was property of “Monaldeschi” of Cervara married with Catherina of Sweden. This enlargement was commissioned to Ippolito Scalza (1532 – 1618) by the then owner of the tower Vincenzo Butius.
Butius, suffering from bad health, was advised by doctors to live near a river, the first airconditioning. The villa was built, so that the Carcaione stream ran under one of the arches which upheld the structure. River deposits, with time, submerged the ground floor and therefore the “piano nobile”- is now on the first floor.

A careful renovation, while providing every comfort, it has maintained the characteristics (thick walls, large wooden beams, terracotta floors), the atmosphere, and character, the quiet.

> L’Hotel Villa Ciconia si trova in Umbria, alle porte di Orvieto, a circa 2 Km dal casello di Orvieto sull’autostrada Firenze – Roma. E’ un’elegante villa del cinquecento, circondata da un grande parco di 2 ettari con piante secolari, alla confluenza del fiume Chiani e del torrente Carcaione.

L’Albergo è classificato “Quattro stelle” l’esercizio risponde a tale Categoria sia per le caratteristiche strutturali che per le attrezzature ed i servizi prestati. Sala bar, sala lettura, 2 sale convegni da 20 a 60 posti e Ristorante Pizzeria. Nel parco i clienti possono usufruire di una piscina immersa nel verde. Parcheggio privato nel parco della Villa per circa 60 vetture.

La storiografia locale fa risalire la costruzione della Villa ad un ampliamento di una torre, la Turchinetta, già proprietà di un Monaldeschi della Cervara, sposato con Caterina di Svezia. Questo ampliamento fu commissionato ad Ippolito Scalza dall’allora proprietario della torre Vincenzo Butius (1532-1618).
A Butius cagionevole di salute, era stato prescritto di vivere vicino ai fiumi, in un luogo fresco.
La villa fu realizzata in modo che una deviazione del torrente Carcaione passasse sotto uno dei tre archi che la sorreggevano. I depositi del fiume hanno nel tempo interrato parzialmente il primo piano, per cui il piano nobile si presenta oggi al piano terreno.

Una ristrutturazione attenta, pur garantendo ogni comfort, ne ha mantenuto le caratteristiche (spesse pareti, grandi travature, pavimenti in cotto), l’atmosfera, la tipicità, la quiete.
