> Historic symbol of Ponte San Giovanni (very close to Perugia) has been one of the main propulsors of the settlement and development of the area, was destroyed by the bombings of the Second World War and, only in the 90s rebuilt to return to the citizens and the territory the symbol and pride of an entire community.

It is not certain that the old bridge was rebuilt on the remains of a Roman bridge or that there was a bridge in Roman times. Generally, however, the foundation of the Ponte Vecchio is assigned to the Roman period, later rebuilt in the Middle Ages and subsequently reorganized towards the fifteenth century, when the Municipality of Perugia tried to repair all the bridges in the area and entrusted it to engineer Bartolomeo Mattioli of Torgiano that most probably also took care of the arrangement of the one in Ponte San Giovanni. Sources written on the Ponte Vecchio, however, are found only after the year one thousand thanks to the archival documentation, where the toponym "Ponte San Giovanni" appears for the first time in 1276 relating to the acts of the city council of Perugia where the restoration of the square and roads facing the bridge, to ensure easier access to the mills in the area.

The design phase of the new bridge begins in 1998 and lasts for about 18 months until its inauguration on 10 June 2000. For the construction of the new bridge only materials belonging to the historical tradition of our land, bricks, stone, were used. wood and copper.

> Simbolo storico di Ponte San Giovanni ha costituito uno dei principali propulsori dell’ insediamento e sviluppo dell’area, veniva distrutto dai bombardamenti della seconda guerra mondiale e, solo negli anni ’90 ricostruito per restituire ai ponteggiani e al territorio il simbolo e l’orgoglio di un’intera comunità.

Non si è certi che il ponte vecchio sia stato ricostruito sui resti di un ponte romano o che sia del tutto esistito un ponte in epoca romana. Generalmente però si assegna al periodo romano la fondazione del Ponte Vecchio, più tardi ricostruito nel medio-evo e successivamente risistemato verso il XV secolo, quando il Comune di Perugia cercò di riparare tutti i ponti del territorio e lo fece affidandosi all’ingegnere Bartolomeo Mattioli di Torgiano che molto probabilmente si occupò anche della sistemazione di quello di Ponte San Giovanni. Fonti scritte sul Ponte Vecchio però si ritrovano solo dopo l’anno mille grazie alla documentazione archivistica, dove compare il toponimo “Ponte San Giovanni” per la prima volta nel 1276 relativo agli atti del consiglio comunale perugino dove si discuteva la restaurazione della piazza e delle strade prospicenti il ponte, per garantire un più facile accesso ai mulini della zona.

La fase di progettazione del nuovo ponte inizia nel 1998 e si protrae per circa 18 mesi fino alla sua inaugurazione il 10 giugno 2000. Per la realizzazione del nuovo ponte sono stati utilizzati solo materiali che appartengono alla tradizione storica della nostra terra, mattoni, pietra, legno e rame.
