Napoleon Bonaparte, between 1796 and 1814, during the French military campaigns, had collected the most important works of the Italian collections to enrich the Louvre Museum, then Musée Central des Arts, opened in 1793. A few years later they would have renamed Musée Napoléon out of gratitude. All the most valuable works were destined for the Louvre, while the less important works were placed in French provincial museums. With the Vienna Congress of 1815 the Papal State and the various local administrations of the Peninsula obtained the return of about half of the works seized by Napoleon.
The painting object of this post is, of course, among those that remained in France, and precisely in Le Mans, in the Musée de Tessé. It is an oil painting on wood (41.2 by 31.7 cm) made by Giovanni di Pietro (called Lo Spagna - Spain around 1450 - Spoleto 1528), for the Church of Montesanto di Todi (Perugia), entitled: "The Virgin with the Child".

Napoleone Bonaparte, tra il 1796 ed il 1814, durante le campagne militari francesi, aveva fatto incetta delle opere più importanti delle collezioni italiane per arricchire il Museo del Louvre, allora Musée Central des Arts, aperto nel 1793. Di lì a qualche anno l’avrebbero ribattezzato per gratitudine Musée Napoléon. Tutte le opere di maggior pregio erano destinate al Louvre, mentre quelle meno importanti furono collocate nei musei francesi di provincia. Con il Congresso di Vienna del 1815 lo Stato Pontificio e le varie amministrazioni locali della Penisola ottenevano la restituzione di circa la metà delle opere sequestrate da Napoleone. Il dipinto oggetto di questo post è, naturalmente, tra quelli che sono rimasti in Francia, e precisamente a Le Mans, nel Musée de Tessé. Si tratta di una pittura olio su tavola (41,2 per 31,7 cm) realizzata da Giovanni di Pietro (detto Lo Spagna - Spagna 1450 circa - Spoleto 1528), per la Chiesa di Montesanto di Todi (Perugia), dal titolo: “La Vergine con il Bambino”.
