Since the end of the sixteenth century the Franciscans of St. Mary of the Angels begin to assign the patronage of the chapels to those who make a request, according to the use over the centuries.

Not only members of the nobility and bourgeoisie, but also municipal institutions and various religious brotherhoods, they show solicitude in the request for conferral of the chapels, to be able to then commission the decoration, as a tangible sign not only of personal devotion to St. Francis and the Mother of God , but also its social status and preferences in terms of art.

> Basilica di Santa Maria degl'Angeli, Cappelle. Lungo le navate laterali si aprono dieci cappelle, cinque per ogni lato, previste dal progetto originario dell'Alessi.

Dalla fine del Cinquecento i Francescani di S. Maria degli Angeli cominciano ad assegnare il patronato delle cappelle a coloro che ne avanzano richiesta, secondo l'uso invalso nei secoli.

Non solo esponenti della nobiltà e borghesia, ma anche istituzioni municipali e varie confraternite religiose, si mostrano solleciti nella richiesta di conferimento delle cappelle, per poterne poi commissionare la decorazione, quale segno tangibile non solo della devozione personale per san Francesco e la Madre di Dio, ma anche del proprio status sociale e delle proprie preferenze in fatto d'arte.
