Once arrived here, in fact, it is difficult not to fall in love: built on the highest part of a hill that dominates the confluence of the Tiber and Carpina rivers, Montone is a small medieval village, perfectly preserved and unchanged over the centuries. Mighty walls surround the town, narrow and winding streets, winding and alternating with the wide staircases that run through the center, and what about the imposing bell towers and the magnificent fortress of Braccio, whose remains wisely restored, following the destruction accomplished from Pope Sixtus IV in 1478, they give us the idea of ​​its importance. The origins of Montone date back to the tenth century, or at least it is only from this moment that we have certain information about its existence.
As early as 1121, the fortified village, although under the direct control of Perugia, had the possibility of establishing statutes and administering public affairs through its magistrates. the protagonist of one of the most daring attempts to create, within Central Italy, a state independent of the power of the Papal State.

Una volta giunti qui, infatti, è difficile non innamorarsene: edificato sulla parte più alta di un colle che domina la confluenza dei fiumi Tevere e Carpina, Montone è un piccolo borgo medioevale, perfettamente conservato ed immutato nei secoli. Possenti mura circondano l'abitato, vie strette e tortuose, si snodano e si alternano alle ampie scalinate che percorrono il centro, e che dire delle imponenti torri campanarie e della magnifica rocca di Braccio, i cui resti sapientemente restaurati, a seguito della distruzione compiuta da Papa Sisto IV nel 1478, ci forniscono l'idea della sua importanza. Le origini di Montone risalgono al X sec., o almeno è solo da questo momento che si hanno notizie certe della sua esistenza.
Già nel 1121 il borgo fortificato, seppur sotto il diretto controllo di Perugia, aveva la possibilità di darsi degli statuti e di amministrare la cosa pubblica attraverso i propri magistrati. il protagonista di uno dei più audaci tentativi di creare, all'interno dell'Italia Centrale, uno stato indipendente dal potere dello Stato Pontificio.
