> CERQUETO is a fraction of the municipality of Marsciano (PG). The village develops along the Marsciano road of the hill (311 m above sea level), which connects Marsciano to Perugia along the peaks of the western hills of the middle Valtiberina.

The old castle, perhaps built in the oak woods (in the Umbrian vernacular vernacular) in the early Middle Ages, must have had a history. The name Cerqueto, according to an opinion recorded by the historian Perugino Annibale Mariotti, may have originated from Circus then turned into Cercus, due to the circular shape of the majestic castle.

The old tower, corroded by time, was supposed to be the lookout for the nocturnal sentinels or for the messages to be announced with the trumpet to the Castellani, when the bell tower had not yet risen, which then overhanged it.

The historian Belforti believed that Cerquetum and Fractae filiorum Azzonis were two names of the same locality as he wrote: "Ne times later and especially in the thirteenth century (Cerqueto) was called Fractae filiorum Azzonis Perus". It is well, however, that from a privilege of the emperor Ludovico in favor of the counts of Marsciano dated Rome 1328 are separately named castrum Cerqueti and Villa Fractae filiorum Azzonis Perus. The first archival documents of 1377, recorded by Mons. Gino Francisci, speak of a castrum castrum Cerqueti and of Villa Fratta (a small neighboring village of Cerqueto) whose inhabitants made a petition to the Priors of Perugia to form a single community; supplication that it was accepted and that, on May 16 of that year, it united the two communities.

Il vecchio castello, sorto forse fra boschi di querce (in vernacolo umbro cerque) nel primo Medioevo, deve aver avuto una storia. Il nome Cerqueto, secondo un'opinione registrata dallo storico perugino Annibale Mariotti, poteva aver avuto origine da Circus poi trasformato in Cercus, per la forma circolare del maestoso castello.

La vecchia torre, corrosa dal tempo, doveva costituire la vedetta per le sentinelle notturne o per i messaggi da annunciare con la tromba ai Castellani, quando ancora non era sorto il campanile, che poi la sovrastò.

Lo storico Belforti riteneva che Cerquetum e Fractae filiorum Azzonis fossero due nomi della stessa localita poichè scriveva: "ne tempi posteriori e segnatamente nel secolo XIII (Cerqueto) fu chiamato Fractae filiorum Azzonis Perus". E' benvero però che da un Privilegio dell'imperatore Ludovico a favore dei conti di Marsciano datato Roma 1328 sono separatamente nominati castrum Cerqueti e Villa Fractae filiorum Azzonis Perus. I primi documenti d'archivio del 1377, rilevati da Mons. Gino Francisci, parlano di un pulchrum castrum Cerqueti e della Villa Fratta (piccola frazione prossima Cerqueto) i cui abitanti fecero una supplica ai Priori di Perugia onde formare una sola comunità; supplica che fu accolta e che, il 16 maggio di quell'anno, unì le due comunità.
