A History stepped in legend
The first Abbey was built at the end of the 6th century around the primitive church of San Silvestro by the noble Lombard Lady Rotruda. An old legend says that Saint Severo died and his remains were brought to Orvieto. Lady Rotruda, wanting to seize them, touched the coffin, however her hand was trapped. To have it released she was compelled to promise the founding of the abbey and a deserving burial to the monk Saint Severo. This is the legendary origin of the Abbey of Saints Severo and his disciple Martirio. The current Abbey was built in the 12th century on the site of the 6th century building.

> ABBAZIA DEI SANTI SEVERO E MARTIRIO
A i piedi del colle che si trova a sud della città di Orvieto è adagiato il complesso monastico dell’abbazia dei Santi Severo e Martirio. Percorrendo la statale 71 che conduce a Bolsena si ha a un certo punto l’impressione di scorgere un borgo fortificato,oggi di proprietà della nobile famiglia Fiumi discendente di Santa Chiara di Assisi,facilmente individuabile da una torre poligonale che svetta sull’ agglomerato costruito interamente in materiale tufaceo e che dà all’insieme un aspetto del tutto singolare . Si tratta di un grande edificio a forma di elle, attualmente costituito da due corpi distaccati che nell’ arco di cinque o sei secoli, dal VI al XII, sono stati modificati, cosi come risulta dagli studi storici sui primi commendatari dell’abbazia, inclusa tra le otto del Distretto di Orvieto, descritte da Lubin nella Notizia Abbatiarum Italiane.

Gli ospiti della Badia possono vivere momenti indimenticabili immersi nel verde delle colline umbre, tra ulivi e filari d'uva. Possono ripercorrere i passi di uomini che hanno lasciato segni indelebili nella storia, camminando tra strutture maestose di un'imponenza emozionante, rese perfettamente accoglienti. Nelle notti estive è piacevole passeggiare alla luce delle fiaccole tra i porticati e il chiostro.
