In 1225, the year before his death, Francis of Assisi, ill and almost blind, had knocked on the door of the convent of S. Damiano, where long ago Chiara had been waiting for the consolation of a visit, and churches to be hosted. The beautiful girl, born in 1193 in Assisi by a rich family, with unusual audacity, presented herself on the night of March 18, 1212, in the dark little church of S. Maria degli Angeli, at the foot of the mountain where Assisi stands, where they were waiting for her Francesco and his friars. The saint cut off his long hair and put on her shoulders the rough woolen sack, making her pronounce the vows of obedience, chastity and poverty. The young Chiara's answer to the Franciscan ideal of poverty was total. La bellissima fanciulla, nata nel 1193 ad Assisi da ricca famiglia, con insolita audacia si presentò, la notte del 18 marzo 1212, nella oscura chiesetta di S. Maria degli Angeli, ai piedi del monte su cui sorge Assisi, dov'erano ad attenderla Francesco e i suoi frati. Il santo le recise la lunga chioma e le pose sulle spalle il ruvido saio di lana grezza, facendole pronunciare i voti di obbedienza, castità e povertà.La risposta della giovane Chiara all'ideale francescano di povertà fu totale. Chiara ebbe il singolare privilegio di vedere proiettate sulle pareti della piccola cella disadorna le immagini vive del santo e i riti delle solenni funzioni che si svolgevano a S. Maria degli Angeli. Per queste prodigiose visioni Chiara ha avuto il titolo di protettrice della televisione, auspicio, anche nel nome, di chiarezza espressiva. Chiara sopravvisse 27 anni alla morte del serafico fondatore. L'inviato di papa Innocenzo IV recò la lungamente attesa bolla di approvazione del privilegio della povertà a Chiara la mattina dell' 11 agosto 1253, solo pochi istanti prima che la santa si congedasse per sempre dalla vita terrena.
