"These things never happened but they are forever" wrote Sallustio in Of the gods and of the world
And in fact, among many Christian saints, also meeting people of classical mythology is one of the surprises that can reserve a visit to the National Gallery: the large showcase of room 20 is full of statuettes produced between the sixteenth and eighteenth century depicting greek-roman deities.
Just like this, attributed by Federico Zeri to Gian Lorenzo Bernini, which takes up the absolutely most dramatic theme of Greek mythology: the slaughter of the children performed by Saturn, who devoured them to kill the one who would have ousted him.

"Queste cose non avvennero mai ma sono per sempre" scriveva Sallustio in Degli dei e del mondo
Ed infatti, tra tanti santi cristiani, incontrare anche personaggi della mitologia classica è una delle sorprese che può riservare una visita alla Galleria Nazionale: la grande vetrina della sala 20 è ricca di statuette prodotte fra Cinquecento e Settecento raffiguranti divinità greco-romane.
Proprio come questa, attribuita da Federico Zeri a Gian Lorenzo Bernini, che riprende il tema in assoluto più drammatico della mitologia greca: la strage dei figli compiuta da Saturno, che li divorò per uccidere colui che lo avrebbe spodestato.
