> The HOTEL SAN LUCA (Spoleto city), run by the Zuccari family, is elegant and sophisticated, featuring a warm and familiar atmosphere. The building’s interior underwent a radical renovation. Consequently, the majority of what you will see is new, but the atmosphere is undoubtedly old world. The building most likely dates back to the mid-19th century. The style of the building was heavily influenced by the nearby Mattatoio, a former slaughterhouse designed by the great architect Ireneo Aleandri who also designed the city’s Teatro Nuovo theatre and Traversa Interna (interior passageway). Of particular interest is the beautiful interior courtyard with the Holy Wellspring, accessible from a spacious gallery that is similar to a cloister.

As you enter the hotel, freshness and brightness will surround you: the natural light filters through the arcade that opens into the central courtyard and reflects on the room’s pastel walls. In the hall, comfortable armchairs are arranged around an 18th-century fireplace and antique furnishings make guests feel right at home. Two canaries occupy an antique birdcage, which blends nicely with the background of pastel colours from the striking collection of 19th-century tureens on display.

In the courtyard, where breakfast and cocktails are served on warm weather days, stands a fountain with a stone tablet from 1601 hanging above. For many years the stone, bearing a Latin inscription, was covered with ivy but following the restoration it was made legible once again. The tablet bears the City of Spoleto’s coat of arms, St. Ponziano on horseback and a depiction of Prospero Biscuri or Bisonti, the city’s vice governor that had it placed there. Next to the tablet is a large stone lion head. Partially submerged in the waters from the spring, a spout of water continues to gush from the lion’s mouth.

> L’ Hotel San Luca, gestito dalla famiglia Zuccari, è una struttura molto curata, sofisticata, che emana calore e familiarità. L’ interno è stato ristrutturato così profondamente che la maggior parte di ciò che si vede è nuovo, ma l’atmosfera è vecchio stile. L’edificio risale molto probabilmente alla metà dell’800 e certamente risente dell’influenza del vicino Mattatoio, opera del grande architetto Ireneo Aleandri, autore del Teatro Nuovo e della traversa interna. In particolare è notevole il cortile interno con la Fonte Santa, cui si accede da un’ampia galleria simile ad un chiostro.

Fin dal momento dell’ingresso, c’è una fresca luminosità con pareti pastello a riflettere la luce, che penetra attraverso le arcate aperte sulla corte centrale. Nella hall, comode poltrone raggruppate attorno ad un caminetto del ‘700 e mobili antichi contribuiscono a far sentire l’ospite come in casa propria. Una coppia di canarini in una gabbia antica riprende l’armonia dei colori pastello sullo sfondo di una importante collezione di zuppiere dell’800.

Nel cortile, dove con la bella stagione si fa colazione o si beve un aperitivo, troneggia la fontana sovrastata dalla lapide del 1601. La pietra, dal testo in latino, per tanto tempo fu coperta dall'edera ma con il restauro tornò nuovamente leggibile: presenta lo stemma del Comune di Spoleto, un san Ponziano a cavallo, e quello del vicegovernatore che le fece apporre, Prospero Biscuri o Bisconti ; accanto ad essa, semi sommersa dalle acque della sorgente, una grande testa di leone in pietra, dalla cui bocca esce ancora uno zampillo.
