> SAN GIMIGNANO. The Collegiate. The frescoes by Taddeo di Bartolo are concentrated on the counter-façade and on the two contiguous walls of the central nave.
Right side of the counter-façade houses the vision of Hell. The diabolical figure of Lucifer dominates the places of punishment of the seven deadly sins, divided into three registers. Above, next to Lucifer, pride and envy are punished, or the sins of which the ancient angel has been guilty. The second register is articulated in the three loca poenarum destined to the sins of the flesh: the throat, the avarice and the lust. The lower band hosts the slothful and the angry. The monstrous Lucifer trifauce sits on his infernal throne with a ferocious grinding sneer; he has three faces, armed with as many pairs of horns, and with his three mouths he devours the great traitors, among them Judas, the traitor of Jesus; a superb man emerges from his monstrous belly-anus; with his hands he crushed two damned and with his paws gnawed by rapacious claws the great 'bad guys' of the Bible and the persecutors of the Christians: Simon Magus, Nero, Averroes, Maxentius, Nebuchadnezzar, Pharaoh, Herod and Cain. Two devils are furious with hammer and pincer on Nero and Herod.
The author inserts in the traditional septenary of the deadly sins, some sub-categories of sin and the assimilated vices. In the case of pride, for example, the punishment involves the blasphemer (sliced ​​by a saw) and the boastful (who delights in the mirror while the devil defecates them on the head). Among the envious is the false witness (with the body covered by scorpions and forced to swallow a boiling liquid); also appear a damn gutted and two hanged ones, one for the feet and the other for the tongue.
Very strong is the scene of the punishment of the vice of the throat: six ghiottoni, among which an unforgettable round-headed monk, are subjected to the torture of Tantalus in front of a table laden with food and drink. In the box of avarice, the miser is strangled with the rope that holds his little coin pile; the ancient saying that money is the devil's dung is illustrated without any allegory in the case of the usurer; the greedy miller is derided by the devils who gobble up coins when it is already reduced to a skeleton; who lends money to usury is immobilized and stabbed.
Among the lustful the sodomite is punished (impaled on a spit that ends up in the mouth of his drudo), the ruffian with his partner (flagellated with the whip), the adulteress (kissed and palpated by a horrid and lewd devil). The slothful remain in the inanity of their laziness despite being stimulated by the bite of the snakes and the beating of the devils. In the field of anger a devil strangles a suicide self-injured who has injured himself with a dagger. At the bottom of the fresco a procession of devils leads a group of damned to their punishment; they drag a woman by the hair and go against a second blonde woman, pouring hot liquid on her and tormenting her with a burning stick.

Lato destro della controfacciata ospita la visione dell’Inferno. La figura diabolica di Lucifero sovrasta i luoghi di punizione dei sette vizi capitali, suddivisi in tre registri. In alto, accanto a Lucifero, sono punite la superbia e l’invidia, ovvero i peccati di cui l’antico angelo si è reso colpevole. Il secondo registro si articola nei tre loca poenarum destinati ai peccati della carne: la gola, l’avarizia e la lussuria. La fascia in basso ospita gli accidiosi e gli iracondi. Il mostruoso Lucifero trifauce siede sul suo trono infernale con un ghigno feroce da massacratore; ha tre facce, munite di altrettante coppie di corna, e con le sue tre bocche divora i grandi traditori, tra i quali Giuda, il traditore di Gesù; dal suo mostruoso ventre-ano fuoriesce un superbo; con le mani stritola due dannati e con le zampe unghiute da rapace artiglia i grandi ‘cattivi’ della Bibbia e i persecutori dei cristiani: Simon Mago, Nerone, Averroè, Massenzio, Nabucodonosor, il Faraone, Erode e Caino. Due diavoli si accaniscono con martello e tenaglia su Nerone ed Erode.
L'autore inserisce nel tradizionale settenario dei vizi capitali, alcune sotto-categorie di peccato e i vizi assimilati. Nel caso della superbia, ad esempio, la punizione coinvolge il bestemmiatore (tranciato da una sega) e la vanagloriosa (che si compiace allo specchio mentre il diavolo le defeca sulla testa). Tra gli invidiosi è inserito il falso testimone (con il corpo coperto dagli scorpioni e costretto a ingoiare un liquido bollente); compaiono anche un dannato sventrato e due impiccati, uno per i piedi e l’altro per la lingua.
Molto forte è la scena della punizione del vizio della gola: sei ghiottoni, tra i quali un indimenticabile monaco rotondetto, sono sottoposti al supplizio di Tantalo di fronte a una tavola imbandita di cibi e bevande. Nel riquadro dell’avarizia, l’avaro è strangolato con la corda che regge la sua scarsella di monete; l’antico detto che il denaro è lo sterco del diavolo è illustrato senza alcuna allegoria nel caso dell’usuraio; l’avido mugnaio è deriso dai diavoli che lo ingozzano di monete quando è ormai già ridotto a scheletro; chi presta soldi a usura viene immobilizzato e pugnalato.
Tra i lussuriosi sono puniti il sodomita (impalato su uno spiedo che finisce in bocca al suo drudo), il ruffiano con la sua compagna (flagellati con la frusta), l’adultera (baciata e palpata da un orrido e lubrico demonio). Gli accidiosi restano fermi nella inanità della loro pigrizia nonostante che vengano stimolati dal morso dei serpenti e dalle bastonate dei diavoli. Nel campo dell’ira un diavolo strangola un autolesionista suicida che si è inferto ferite con un pugnale. Sul fondo dell’affresco un corteo di diavoli conduce un gruppo di dannati verso la loro punizione; trascinano per i capelli una donna e si accaniscono contro una seconda donna bionda versandole addosso del liquido bollente e tormentandole il sesso con un bastone infuocato.
