The history of Lavender is lost in the mists of time. Known and used by man for over 2500 years, it was anciently used for the preparation of lucky talismans and spells of love, for its intense and inebriating perfume.

The name of this plant derives from the Latin "wash" and refers to the use made of it by the Greeks and Romans who collected its flowers to perfume the water of the baths where they were immersed, abandoning themselves to relaxing and fragrant baths.

Lavender flowers, unlike many other species, retain their fragrance for a long time, even if dried. It is an ancient custom to fill small canvas bags with dried flowers and then store them in the drawers, to perfume the linen and keep away the moths. Its antiparasitic properties make it a useful remedy even in the case of lice.

The scent of Lavender attracts bees, which produce an excellent aromatic honey, while they do not like the mosquitoes that are annoyed: it is therefore advisable, in the sultry summer evenings, to rub with Lavender water to cool off and, at the same time, avoid annoying bites.

La storia della Lavanda si perde nella notte dei tempi. Conosciuta e utilizzata dall’uomo da oltre 2500 anni, veniva anticamente impiegata per la preparazione di talismani portafortuna e incantesimi d’amore, per il suo profumo intenso e inebriante.

Il nome di questa pianta deriva dal latino ''lavare'' e si riferisce all'uso che ne facevano greci e romani che raccoglievano i suoi fiori per profumare l'acqua delle terme in cui si immergevano, abbandonandosi a bagni rilassanti e profumati.

I fiori di Lavanda, contrariamente a tante altre specie, conservano a lungo il loro profumo, anche se secchi. È antica consuetudine riempire con i fiori secchi dei piccoli sacchettini di tela e poi riporli nei cassetti, per profumare la biancheria e tenere lontane le tarme. Le sue proprietà antiparassitarie ne fanno un utile rimedio anche in caso di pidocchi.

Il profumo della Lavanda attira le api, che producono un ottimo miele aromatico, mentre non piace alle zanzare che ne vengono infastidite: è consigliabile, dunque, nelle afose sere estive, frizionarsi con acqua di Lavanda per rinfrescarsi e, nello stesso tempo, evitare fastidiose punture.
