The history of beer in Perugia has ancient roots and boasts a prestigious past. One of the milestones of this noble tradition was placed in 1875, when the Perugia Brewery was founded by Ferdinando Sanvico, who arrived very young in the city from Lombardy.

It is therefore one of the first breweries that arose in Italy, together with other historic brands.

In those years the company was located in some premises of Palazzo Silvestri, in the central Via Baglioni, near the snow deposits located in the basement of Rocca Paolina and used at the time as primordial refrigerators for the maturation and preservation of beer, made in special oak barrels.

The draft beer was split with cherry wood impellers, cooled with ice, while the distribution was made thanks to carts pulled by powerful Maremma horses. Not infrequently deliveries to the grocery store - refreshment of the railway station and the few taverns of Fontivegge were carried out with a handcart. A journey of 5 kilometers!

In the early twentieth century the factory reached a significant production and beer was distributed throughout the territory of central Italy. The headquarters was thus transferred to the larger premises of Via Oradina (now Via Bartolo) that stretched through the cellars that led from the Turreno theater to Piazza Piccinino. All this until 1927 when Birra Perugia ceases its activity.

At the beginning of the 2000s a group of friends, in love with beer and their roots, began to design the "rebirth" of the brewery, with the aim of returning the beer to the city and making a prestigious piece of history contemporary. After years of studies, research, attempts and sacrifices, the Perugia Beer Factory is again a reality.

La storia della birra a Perugia ha radici antiche e vanta un passato prestigioso. Una delle pietre miliari di questa nobile tradizione fu posta nel 1875, anno di fondazione della Fabbrica della Birra Perugia ad opera di Ferdinando Sanvico, arrivato giovanissimo in città dalla Lombardia.

Si tratta dunque di uno dei primi birrifici sorti in Italia, insieme ad altri marchi storici come Wuhrer a Brescia, Forst a Merano, Dreher a Trieste, Peroni a Roma, Paszkowski a Firenze.

In quegli anni l’azienda aveva sede in alcuni locali di palazzo Silvestri, nella centrale via Baglioni, vicino ai depositi di neve ubicati nei sotterranei della Rocca Paolina e utilizzati all’epoca come primordiali frigoriferi per la maturazione e la conservazione della birra, fatta in appositi fusti di rovere.

La birra alla spina si spillava con impanti in legno di ciliegio, raffreddati con il ghiaccio, mentre la distribuzione veniva fatta grazie a carretti trainati da poderosi cavalli maremmani. Non di rado le consegne alla drogheria – ristoro della stazione ferroviaria e alle poche osterie di Fontivegge venivano effettuate con un carretto a mano. Un viaggio di ben 5 chilometri!

Nei primi del Novecento la fabbrica raggiunse una produzione significativa e la birra veniva distribuita su tutto il territorio dell’Italia centrale. La sede venne così trasferita nei più ampi locali di via Oradina (oggi via Bartolo) che si estendevano attraverso le cantine che dal teatro Turreno si spingevano fin sotto piazza Piccinino. Il tutto fino al 1927 quando Birra Perugia cessa la sua attività.

All'inizio degli anni Duemila un gruppo di amici, innamorati della birra e delle proprie radici, comincia a progettare la “rinascita” del birrificio, con l’obiettivo di restituire alla città la sua birra e rendere contemporaneo un prestigioso pezzo di storia. Dopo anni di studi, ricerche, tentativi e sacrifici, la Fabbrica della Birra Perugia è di nuovo realtà.
