Symbol of the medieval Municipality of Perugia were built in 1274 to protect the sacellum of Sant'Ercolano, protector of the city, in the ancient cathedral.
In 1281 wings were added to the griffin and both sculptures, completely gilded, were placed on the fountain made by Arnoldo di Cambio at the southern end of the main square. From 1301 to 1966 they assumed a strongly symbolic function, placed on the facade of the town hall, above the entrance portal of the Notari hall.
Divided in the hall of the City Council in 1985, after the substitution with copies in their external location, they are returned here, in temporary placement, to the admiration of the public.

Simbolo del Comune medievale perugino furono realizzate nel 1274 a protezione del sacello di sant'Ercolano, protettore della città, nell'antica cattedrale.
Nel 1281 furono aggiunte le ali al grifo e ambedue le sculture, completamente dorate, furono poste sulla fontana realizzata da Arnoldo di Cambio all'estremità meridionale della piazza maggiore. Dal 1301 al 1966 assolsero alla loro funzione fortemente simbolica, collocate sulla facciata del palazzo comunale, sopra il portale d'ingresso della sala dei Notari.
Tasferite nella sala del Consiglio comunale nel 1985, dopo la sostuzione con copie nella loro ubicazione esterna, sono qui restituite, in collocazione provvisoria, all'ammirazione del pubblico.
