> LAKE OF PIEDILUCO is a lake in central Italy, on whose banks lies the village of Piediluco, a hamlet of Terni.

Located at the south-eastern outskirts of Umbria, with a branch that borders Lazio, the lake of Piediluco can be considered the largest natural lake basin in the region after Lake Trasimeno.

Irregular in shape with a perimeter of about 13 kilometers, the lake is at an altitude of 375 meters, with a maximum depth of 19 meters.

It represents, together with other small bodies of water located in the province of Rieti, one of the remains of the ancient Lacus Velinus, a large basin of alluvial origin that came to form starting from the Quaternary.

Its natural tributary is the Rio Fuscello, the other two tributaries are instead represented by canals built by man, one that connects it to the river Velino, the other that makes to channel into the lake a portion of water derived instead from the river Nera, long well 42 kilometers.

Piediluco is also a small village of medieval origin, even if the area has been uninhabited in previous eras in fact archaeological excavations have shown, the presence of settlements placed in the late Bronze Age; instead, for what concerns the pre-Roman and Roman era, there are only hypotheses even if it is certain that the area, before being conquered by the Romans around the middle of the III century BC, was inhabited by the Sabines.

> Il LAGO DI PIEDILUCO è un lago dell’Italia centrale, sulle cui rive sorge il paese di Piediluco, frazione di Terni.
Collocato alle propaggini sud-orientali dell’ Umbria, con un ramo che sconfina nel Lazio, il lago di Piediluco può essere considerato il più grande bacino lacustre naturale della regione dopo il lago Trasimeno.
Di forma irregolare con un perimetro di circa 13 chilometri, il lago si trova ad un’altitudine di 375 metri, con una profondità massima attestata sui 19 metri.

Rappresenta, insieme ad altri piccoli specchi d’acqua situati in provincia di Rieti, uno dei resti dell’antico Lacus Velinus, grande bacino di origine alluvionale venutosi a formare a partire dal Quaternario.
Il suo immissario naturale è il Rio Fuscello, gli altri due immissari sono invece rappresentati da canali costruiti dall'uomo, uno che lo collega al fiume Velino, l’altro che fa convogliare nel lago una porzione di acqua derivata invece dal fiume Nera, lungo ben 42 chilometri.

Piediluco è anche un piccolo borgo di origine medievale,anche se la zona è stata disabitata nelle epoche precedenti infatti scavi archeologici hanno dimostrato, la presenza di insediamenti collocabili nella tarda età del Bronzo; invece, per ciò che riguarda l’epoca pre-romana e romana,ci sono solo ipotesi anche se è sicuro che l’area, prima di essere conquistata dai romani intorno alla metà del III secolo a.C., sia stata abitata dai Sabini.
