The castle was built in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, when a Benedictine community decided to enclose the small residential nucleus of the area with walls. The real defensive structure, however, was born thanks to the German baron Sancio, who came to Italy in the wake of Emperor Conrad II (990-1039).

Il castello fu edificato nei secoli XI e XII, quando una comunità benedettina decise di cingere con mura il piccolo nucleo abitativo della zona. La struttura difensiva vera e propria, però, nacque grazie al barone tedesco Sancio, che venne in Italia al seguito dell'imperatore Corrado II (990-1039).
