> RACE TO THE RING, in Narni
The taste of living history A.D. 1371

No party in Narni exceeded for splendor and duration that took place in honor of the "Saint Juvenal", the first Bishop of the city. In local worship, the festival traditionally takes place on 3 May.

The city statutes renewed in 1371, codified those that were the ancient rites and the ludi that were held in Narni in honor of "Juvenal defensor civitatis".

Since May 1, the Auctioneer made public the festive event. On the evening of the 2nd, after complete, an imposing procession took place: the illumination went under the inflection of the gonfalons, accompanied by religious choirs and the sound of musical instruments, in the Cathedral where castles and guilds were given to make their own offer of wax .

On 3 May, the day dedicated to the Holy Youth, after a solemn religious ceremony in the Cathedral, the party assumed its own playful character, leaving space for traditional equestrian games; the race of the PALIO and the race to the RING.

The first was a competition of pure speed that took place along the route that from S. Andrea in Lagia reached the petronum in the Piazza dei Priori, to which the milites and the equites, could enroll one of their horses led by a young rider. The prize was a silk Palio, about six meters long, worth three pounds of gold.
The Race to the Ring was instead reserved for the Narnese knights. The Dominus Vicarius invited those who intended to run the ring to line up at the corner of the church of S. Saved in the Piazza dei Priori and then fling with its own rod to put the target of the value of 100 money Cortonesi. The order of departure was established according to membership of the Terzieri's military brigades: Mezule, Fraporta, Santa Maria.

The purchase of the Palio and the Ring was made with the payment of 4 gold Florins due to the Jewish community.

Enhancing the architectural beauty of the place through quality shows and events, reconstructing places and moments in the history and local tradition, involving the public in a new sense of celebration, deepening and disseminating the particularities of a period like the three hundred, are some of the objectives that the Ente Corsa all'Anello aims, The festival as a reconstruction of the events that took place in honor of Blessed Giovenale in the year 1371, is characterized by numerous events during the two weeks of festivities that culminate on the second Sunday of May.

> CORSA ALL'ANELLO di NARNI
Il Gusto di Vivere la Storia A.D. 1371

Nessuna festa a Narni superava per fasto e durata quella che si svolgeva in onore del Santo Giovenale, Primo Vescovo della città. Nel culto locale la festa si colloca tradizionalmente al 3 maggio.

Gli statuti cittadini rinnovati nel 1371, codificarono quelli che erano gli antichi riti e i ludi che si svolgevano a Narni in onore di Giovenale defensor civitatis.

Sin dal primo maggio il Banditore rendeva pubblico l’evento festivo. La sera del 2, dopo compieta, si svolgeva una imponente processione: la luminaria si recava sotto Io sventolio dei gonfaloni, accompagnata dai cori religiosi e dal suono degli strumenti musicali, nella Cattedrale dove Castelli e Corporazioni venivano vocati ad effettuare la propria offerta di cera.

Il 3 maggio, giorno dedicato al Santo Giovenale, dopo una solenne cerimonia religiosa in Cattedrale, la festa assumeva il proprio carattere ludico, lasciando spazio ai tradizionali giochi equestri; la corsa del PALIO e la corsa all’ANELLO.

La prima era una competizione di pura velocità che si effettuava lungo il percorso che da S. Andrea in Lagia raggiungeva il petronum nella Piazza dei Priori alla quale i milites e gli equites, potevano iscrivere un loro cavallo guidato da un giovane cavaliere. Il premio era un Palio di seta della lunghezza di circa sei metri del valore di tre libbre d’oro.
La Corsa all’Anello era invece riservata ai cavalieri narnesi. II Dominus Vicarius invitava coloro che intendevano correre l’anello a schierarsi all’angolo della chiesa di S. Salvato nella Piazza dei Priori per poi scagliarsi con la proprio asta ad infilare il bersaglio del valore di 100 Soldi Cortonesi. L’ordine di partenza era stabilito secondo l’appartenenza alle Brigate militari dei Terzieri: Mezule, Fraporta, Santa Maria.

L’acquisto del Palio e dell’Anello era effettuato con l’esborso di 4 Fiorini d’oro spettante alla comunità ebraica.

Durante il cinquecento, si aggiunsero ai tradizionali giochi, il combattimento tra il bufalo e il toro, la lotta, la quintana, le commedie allestite dai giovani narnesi, la colazione offerta alle donne.

Ricreata con successo nel 1969, la Corsa all’Anello si distingue nel panorama delle Feste Storiche nazionali ed europee come una delle manifestazioni che più di altre ha ricercato collegamenti con la propria tradizione storica, attivando le forze del volontariato per uno sviluppo turistico e culturale della città.

Valorizzare le bellezze architettoniche del luogo attraverso spettacoli e manifestazioni di qualità, ricostruire luoghi e momenti della storia e della tradizione locale, coinvolgere il pubblico in un ritrovato senso della festa, approfondire e divulgare le particolarità di un periodo come il trecento, sono alcuni degli obiettivi che l’Ente Corsa all'Anello si prefigge, La festa quale ricostruzione degli eventi che si svolgevano in onore del Beato Giovenale nell'anno 1371, è caratterizzata da numerose manifestazioni durante le due settimane di festeggiamenti che culminano la seconda domenica di maggio.
