Nothing is known of the existence of a pre-Roman nucleus, but it is certain that the Roman Tadinum had to be a rather important nucleus because it arose along the Via Flaminia thus fulfilling a connecting function. He suffered numerous devastations following the barbarian invasions; it was for these reasons that the city had to be rebuilt around 1180 on the nearby hills, as shown by the new name it assumed, that is Gualdo, which derives from the German "walt" which means "forest". It became a free common commune in the Middle Ages and subsequently passed to the Papal State.

Niente sappiamo dell'esistenza di un nucleo preromano, ma è certo che la Tadinum romana dovette essere un nucleo piuttosto importante poiché sorse lungo la via Flaminia assolvendo così una funzione di collegamento. Subì numerose devastazioni in seguito alle invasioni barbariche; fu per tali motivi che la città dovette essere ricostruita intorno al 1180 sui colli vicini, come ci dimostra il nuovo nome da essa assunto, cioè Gualdo, che deriva dal tedesco "walt" che significa "bosco". Divenuta nel Medio Evo libero comune, passò successivamente allo Stato Pontificio.
