The Sanctuary Madonna della Stella. The small town is located halfway between MONTEFALCO and SPOLETO, in the middle of the Spoleto plain.
The first traces of a church in the place where the present sanctuary stands date back to 1525. The original church, dedicated to St. Bartholomew the apostle, however, fell in 1832 following a violent earthquake. Only a fresco was saved, a Madonna with Child by Paolo Botulli da Percanestro (disciple of Perugino).
In 1860, Madame Santa Bonifazi of Fratta, a locality in whose territory the ancient church was located, sent to the parish priest, Don Brunetti, that Our Lady "... wants to be honored again in that place" and to rebuild the church . The economic situation of the parish, however, was not such as to allow such a great work and the parish priest commented that, if the Madonna wanted the church, she had to provide the necessary money.

It so happened that, in 1862, a child of only 5 years, who played near the ruins of the church of St. Bartholomew, claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary. The child was called Federico (Righetto) Cionchi. To him, the Virgin, according to the facts referred to before would be manifested by calling him by name, then he would have caressed on his head, then he would have addressed simple words ("Righetto, be good!").
The boy, back home, told his mother he had seen a "beautiful lady" and their dialogue. The little sister Rosa, who was with him during the games, reported, on the contrary, that she had not seen any lady.
His mother forbade Righetto to go back to the ruins without his permission, but he continued to report further appearances to his mother.
It was she, unconsciously, confiding the matter to a friend, to generate so much attention on her son, who soon became the object of questions and requests from people eager to witness an apparition. The friend, in fact, commented saying that "... children are loved by heaven".
The news of these apparitions spread rapidly and even surpassed the regional borders. A significant contribution to the spread of the news came from the testimonies of presumed graces and miracles received from the faithful who frequented the church.

So proceeded to build a new and larger sanctuary, whose works were financed by the subsidies of the faithful. The church was dedicated to Maria Auxilium Christianorum (Mary help of Christians).
Later, a new earthquake (1878) devastated the newly built church, but with the contributions of so many devotees and Pope Leo XIII the work was quickly restored.

In 1997 the sanctuary was severely hit by the earthquake that devastated the area. The restoration of the church was completed in 2005, while those for the restoration of the adjoining monastery are underway.

Il Santuario Madonna della Stella. Il piccolo paese si trova a metà strada tra MONTEFALCO e SPOLETO, al centro della pianura spoletina.
Le prime tracce di una chiesa nel luogo ove sorge l'attuale santuario risalgono al 1525. La chiesa originaria, dedicata a san Bartolomeo apostolo, cade però nel 1832 a seguito di un violento terremoto. Si salva solo un affresco, una Madonna con Bambino di Paolo Botulli da Percanestro (discepolo del Perugino).
Nel 1860 la signora Santa Bonifazi di Fratta, località nel cui territorio si trovava l'antica chiesa, mandò a dire al parroco, don Brunetti, che la Madonna «...vuole essere di nuovo onorata in quel luogo» e di ricostruire la chiesa. La situazione economica della parrocchia, però, non era tale da consentire un'opera così grandiosa ed il parroco commentò che, se la Madonna voleva la chiesa, doveva provvedersi il denaro necessario.

Accadde quindi che, nel 1862, un bambino di soli 5 anni, che giocava nei pressi dei ruderi della chiesa di san Bartolomeo, sostenne di aver visto la Vergine Maria. Il bambino si chiamava Federico (Righetto) Cionchi. A lui, la Vergine, secondo i fatti riferiti prima si sarebbe manifestata chiamandolo per nome, poi lo avrebbe accarezzato sul capo, quindi gli avrebbe rivolto parole semplici («Righetto, sii buono!»).
Il fanciullo, tornato a casa, riferì alla madre di aver veduto una "bella signora" ed il loro dialogo. La sorellina Rosa, che stava con lui durante i giochi riferì, al contrario, di non aver visto nessuna signora.
La mamma proibì a Righetto di recarsi nuovamente presso i ruderi senza il suo permesso, ma egli continuò a riferire ulteriori apparizioni alla madre.
Fu lei, inconsapevolmente, confidando la cosa ad un'amica, a generare tanta attenzione sul suo figliolo, che ben presto divenne oggetto di domande e richieste da parte di persone desiderose di assistere ad una apparizione. L'amica, infatti, commentava dicendo che «...i fanciulli sono amati dal cielo».
La notizia di queste apparizioni si diffuse rapidamente e superò anche i confini regionali. Un contributo significativo alla diffusione della notizia venne dalle testimonianze di presunte grazie e miracoli ricevuti da parte dei fedeli che frequentavano la chiesa.

Si procedette così alla costruzione di un nuovo e più grande santuario, i cui lavori vennero finanziati dalle sovvenzioni dei fedeli. La chiesa fu dedicata a Maria Auxilium Christianorum (Maria aiuto dei cristiani).
In seguito, un nuovo terremoto (1878) devastò la chiesa appena costruita, ma con i contributi di tanti devoti e di papa Leone XIII l'opera fu ripristinata rapidamente.

Nel 1997 il santuario è stato duramente colpito dal terremoto che ha devastato l'Umbria e le Marche. I lavori di restauro della chiesa si sono conclusi nel 2005, mentre quelli per il restauro del convento annesso sono in corso.
