> The Abbey of San Cassiano is an ancient Benedictine Abbey located near Narni in the province of Temi.L 'Abbey dates back to the tenth century, at the time of the Pope Narnese John XIII (965-972) and S. Orso, abbot . The abbey was built on a fortified monastery dating back to the Gothic wars (6th century); probably it was wanted by a Byzantine general, Belisario, in analogy to that dedicated to S. Juvenal, built in Orte at the time of Pope Virgil (538-555).
The two fortified monasteries had to watch over the Nera's gorge, which was the last defense of the Byzantine corridor that ensured the territorial continuity between Rome and Ravenna. Some scholars put forward the hypothesis that it was a bit like the cradle of the Benedictine order in the area of ​​Narni and that it originated the different monasteries scattered throughout the territory of which we still bear witness. Around 1400 it became an abbey and was a contested title between the bishop of Narni and other prelates and cardinals. The Greek cross plant is a truly exceptional feature.

Giovenale, fatto costruire a Orte al tempo del Papa Virgilio (538-555).
I due monasteri fortificati dovevano vigilare sulla gola del Nera, che era l’ultima difesa del corridoio bizantino che assicurava la continuità territoriale fra Roma e Ravenna. Alcuni studiosi avanzano l’ipotesi che fosse stata un po’ come la culla dell’ordine benedettino nella zona di Narni e che da essa abbiano avuto origine i diversi monasteri sparsi per il territorio di cui abbiamo ancora testimonianza. Intorno al 1400 divenne abbazia e fu titolo conteso tra il vescovo di Narni ed altri prelati e cardinali. La pianta a croce greca è una particolarità davvero eccezionale.
