> Exactly 740 years ago, February 13, 1278, the Perugian chronicles record the arrival of water in the Piazza Grande: "the extraordinary engineering work of the aqueduct was thus completed, which brought water from the Monte Pacciano springs in the city with a journey of about 4 km ".
To celebrate this feat the Fontana Maggiore was built, still today a symbol of Perugia. The inscription in verse that runs on the tiles of the upper basin recalls the names of the architects of the aqueduct, Boninsegna and Fra Bevignate, together with the artists responsible for the sculptural decoration, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. The Fountain still speaks to us all with the words engraved more than seven centuries ago: "look, you who pass, the source from the happy murmur, if you look well you will see wonders".

Per celebrare questa impresa venne realizzata la Fontana Maggiore, ancora oggi monumento simbolo di Perugia. L’iscrizione in versi che corre sulle formelle del bacino superiore ricorda i nomi degli artefici dell’acquedotto, Boninsegna e fra Bevignate, insieme agli artisti responsabili della decorazione scultorea, Nicola e Giovanni Pisano. La Fontana parla ancora a tutti noi con le parole incise più di sette secoli fa: “guarda, tu che passi, la fonte dal lieto mormorio, se osservi bene potrai vedere meraviglie”.
